Undergang: Til døden os skiller

Undergang’s 2010 debut “Indhentet af Døden” was a fantastic death metal release that tore my head off with its uncompromisingly heavy attack. Now, two years later, the band is finally ready with the follow up and “Til Døden Os Skiller” is a continuation down the path set by their debut.

Album opener “Opløste Ådsler” starts with some severe Bolt Thrower worship but the pace drops and the band goes off into doom-death territory for the second half of the song before finishing things off in very aggressive fashion. “Håbet Er Ligblegt” alternates between some furious grind and a slow, thick and sludgy riff to great effect while “Rådden Messe” opens with a chunky bass line and is followed by a heavy mid tempo riff bringing about a claustrophobic atmosphere. “Stranguleret” is dirty and raw death metal that again effortlessly alternates between tempos and manages to be groovy at the same time. “Ormeorgie” is the centre piece of the album for me. Heavy as fuck and with a brutal groove and swagger to the song, this is some intense death metal. The song alternates again between tempos and goes from a mid paced and catchy groove to all out blasting in a very natural and organic way. “Kadavermarch” closes out the album and is a lengthy instrumental that builds some great atmosphere and is a pretty perfect ending to “Til Døden Os Skiller.”

Undergang has made some changes to their sound second time around. The trio still fuses death metal, grind and doom into their songs but do so in a more effortless manner here. The riffs flow into one another and the various parts of each song sit together very comfortably. The focus is always on the thick and heavy as fuck riffs and it works because this album is full of some great death metal riffing. Bolt Thrower still sounds like the bands main influence but added in with touches of Asphyx and a crusty feel to some of the faster grind bits. At times the overall sound and atmosphere of “Til Døden Os Skiller”” reminds me a bit of American bands like Sanctum and Stormcrow who take early Bolt thrower as a starting point and add various other extreme metal elements into the mix. The production is raw and dirty but also immensely heavy and is really perfect for these songs. The only thing that bugged me a bit was the samples inserted before almost every song here. I found it a bit pointless and as the samples were mostly in Italian I think, so I couldn’t understand them either.

Minor irritations aside, “Til Døden Os Skiller” is a pretty kickass release. The songs are heavy and brutal, the sound is nasty and Undergang has shown that their debut was no flash in the pan. “Til Døden Os Skiller” is on par with the debut and maybe even a little bit better.
